Why Tremoços?

Tremoços—also called lupin beans—are yellow legumes traditionally eaten across the Mediterranean and parts of South America. They have been enjoyed for thousands of years; archaeologists even discovered lupin seeds in an Egyptian tomb from the 22nd century BC. Naturally gluten‑free and delightfully nutty, these beans are packed with nutrients and have a long culinary tradition in Portugal and Spain.

High Protein & Fibre

Tremoços are a nutritional powerhouse. Whole seeds contain around 30–40 % protein and approximately 30–37 g of dietary fibre per 100 g. Flour made from sweet lupin beans offers about 40 % protein and 37 g fibre per 100 g. Purified lupin protein isolates produced via alkaline extraction concentrate the protein to levels above 70 %, even exceeding 90 %. Thanks to this unique macronutrient profile and very low digestible carbohydrate content, tremoços are perfect for high‑protein, low‑carb diets.

Rich in Vitamins & Minerals

Beyond protein and fibre, tremoços provide B vitamins along with calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and manganese. The blend of soluble and insoluble fibres acts as a prebiotic to support a healthy gut microbiome and digestion.

Supports Heart & Metabolic Health

Whole lupin consumption has been linked to improved satiety, better glycaemic control and lower blood pressure. Including tremoços in meals may therefore help reduce cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors while keeping you full longer.

A Sustainable, Ancient Crop

Lupin plants are remarkably resilient. They thrive in poor, dry soils where other crops fail and improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Growing tremoços requires less water and fertiliser than many legumes, making them an environmentally friendly choice for regenerative agriculture.
